Books I read on my summer vacation: I got my wish. A vacation to sit around and read books. While Rich was in a training class in California, I relaxed by the pool (or in the hotel suite) reading, reading, reading. When I got bored, I'd go find a good place to buy books. Some of the libraries in Orange County have permanent used books stores in them and I browsed at the ones in Irvine and Laguna Beach (and spent wonderful meditation times by the ocean). I shopped in Barnes & Noble, Borders, and B. Dalton, too. Up in L.A., I enjoyed The Bodhi Tree, a metaphysical bookstore, which has a whole used book annex, too. Two excellent science fiction books brought with from the Schaumburg Library started me off: The
Visitor by Sheri S. Tepper
The
Golden Age by John C. Wright
Even though I already had a copy of Name of the Rose by Umberto Eco, when I saw it at the Boddhi Tree Annex, I knew I had to read it again while I had all the vacation time. I enjoyed it even more the second time around, plus this edition had an author's postscript, valuable to me as a writer and a fan of this book. This mystery story set in a monastery in the 14th century is not light reading -- the history, philosophy, and thoughts about religious doctrine make this book incredibly worthwhile. I
also read the fantasy American
Gods by Neil Gaiman and the Kinsey Milhone mystery P
is for Peril by Sue Grafton.
